"We are losing one of the greatest managers in world football, one of the greatest managers Liverpool have ever had, so it is a sad day without a doubt," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"But at the same time, we have to look forward to the new man coming in and getting behind him. Bill Shankly left, Bob Paisley left, Kenny Dalglish left, and Liverpool have moved on," he added.

On his preferred candidate to coach Liverpool after Klopp, he said: "You can't get away from Xabi Alonso because he is already highly respected at Liverpool because of what he did as a player. He is a Champions League winner, he has kept himself at a really good level and he is a World Cup winner."

He continued: "At the moment, the job he has done at Bayer Leverkusen makes him the outstanding young coach in European football and that surely puts him at the front of the queue."

Xabi Alonso is at the top of the list of coaches nominated to succeed Klopp at Liverpool, and the Spaniard was asked about it.

Alonso replied: "At the moment I am really happy here, I am enjoying my work here and I feel challenged every day and every game."

He said: "I think this is the right place and that's all I can say. What will happen in the future I don't know and I don't really care, to be honest."
