Klopp reveals his plan to retire from coaching
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he is already planning his retirement after claiming he would not continue in that profession into his seventies.
The German is enjoying a very successful career, having taken the reins at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool, and in that time, he has won three league titles and the Champions League.
Despite this, he has been under pressure this season as Liverpool is currently experiencing a miserable season under him.
Having been a manager for more than two decades, Klopp, 55, has suggested he cannot handle the pressures of the job for another 20 years.
"After 22 years in this profession, I know when I can't change anything anymore, and I know this is the moment when I stop thinking about it," the Liverpool coach said in statements to Mike Calvin's "Football People" podcast.
- "I sleep really well, I come home and I have half an hour, that's the last 30 minutes of the day where I really think about the job," he added.
- Klopp continued: "The job is incredibly demanding, it's also great, that's why I said when Roy Hodgson came back to Crystal Palace again and I asked him: Why again? He said: I love it."
"I can't see myself at the age of 70 and be alert in any weather and train for an hour or two," the German noted.
- He continued: "I can't see it but I understand a little bit where they are coming from, I hope that the other things are that much fun for me and I'm really fine because I'm not involved in that anymore."
With Klopp confirming his intention to stop coaching in at least 15 years time, he also revealed that he already has plans once that moment comes, with his family among his priorities.
"We're going to be grandparents in May and we can't wait, but I won't really be around all day with my grandson, holidays, etc."
And Klopp concluded: “I hope at that time to be with family and friends in a nice play and watch football because this is what I will do for the rest of my life, I know that.”
While it remains to be seen when Klopp will actually step back from training in the future, it appears likely that he will remain with Liverpool until at least the summer of 2026 after extending his contract at Anfield last year.
His previous deal was due to expire in the summer of 2024, with Klopp hinting he would run out of contract and then move on, before making a detour to sign an extension.
