The PS5 gets DVR support in Japan this year
Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 is gaining DVR functionality in Japan with a new app that works with Nasne tuners.
The app is called Torne, and it should be available later this year.
And while Microsoft has discontinued its OneGuide live TV listings for the Xbox One, Sony's earlier efforts that brought live TV and even DVR features to the PlayStation are starting to make a comeback.
Torne was originally a live TV tuner for PS3 released in 2010 that allowed you to save broadcast programs via disk to your platform and transfer them to PSP or PS Vita.
It was followed by Nasne, a digital media box with built-in satellite and terrestrial tuners that connect to many of the company's products.
Nasne can be used as a standard media storage and playback device as well, and its capacity can be expanded via external disks.
Nasne added his own storage space, and worked like a NAS drive, with the recordings available through the mobile app.
Sony stopped selling the Nasne in 2019, but last year Japanese peripheral manufacturer Buffalo announced that it was taking over the product and releasing Buffalo-branded versions, with the first models launching this spring.
The new Nasne still looks like the PS3, with the Buffalo logo, and the company doubled the internal storage capacity to 2 terabytes, while the external storage capacity tripled to 6 terabytes.
You can also combine multiple units to record more than one channel at a time.
And while it is very difficult to buy the PS 5, those who have a PS5 will still be able to enjoy the classic DVDs they might have with the addition of this new hardware.
Although most movies and shows are still streamed over the Internet, the addition of this device can revive old DVDs.
And still, there are people who enjoy watching their favorite shows using DVD without interruption, and they don't even need to be connected to the Internet.
Buffalo should put the Nasne up for sale later this month for 29,800 yen (about $ 270).
