The newspaper did not explain the reason for which the 36-year-old had suffered a heart attack, as he was transferred to hospital after his condition deteriorated.

The newspaper quoted his wife, Mora Rivera, in which she wrote:
"The love of my life, my soulmate, what a shock it gave me."

She added, "The last few nights have been horrible. It's really scary. I'm writing this because you're still here with us and a little better. It's amazing how everything can change in an instant."

And she continued: "Life can surprise us, test us, and instill fear, but with faith, strength and hope, we can get out of all the bad moments, I want you to be with me forever, Mark."

Gonzales, who holds South African and Chilean citizenship, moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2005, coming from Albacete, Spain, and two years later he moved to Real Betis in 2007.

Gonzalez scored two goals in 25 appearances for Liverpool, and was in the team that was defeated in the Champions League final 2-1 by Milan in 2007.
