Ready For brings a DeX desktop to Edge Plus

Motorola is expanding its Edge Plus flagship phone with a new desktop interface called Ready For.

Similar to Samsung's DeX, the Ready For platform allows users to connect their smartphones to a larger screen using a USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to HDMI cable, allowing the Edge Plus to be used as a PC.

The company envisions four different use cases for the Ready For platform, where users can turn their Edge Plus into a portable desktop computer, complete with a mouse or Bluetooth keyboard - similar to DeX.

But Motorola also has more interesting ideas on how to use the Edge Plus, such as turning the phone into a video conferencing station using smartphone cameras - either the 108MP main lens or the 16MP ultra-wide lens - for a better video chatting experience.

There are also entertainment options, where players can pair a controller and use Edge Plus as a standalone game, either for original mobile games, like Fortnite, or with game-streaming services, like xCloud.

And users can also connect their phones as a portable set-top box with ease - Motorola envisages connecting the Edge Plus to your hotel room TV, giving you access to all streaming apps when traveling without having to worry about setting up the wireless network in your room.

It is noteworthy that the Ready For or DeX platform is not the first attempt to convert a smartphone into a computer, as the mobile phone book is full of previous attempts, such as the Palm Foleo or Motorola's LapDock Atrix 4G extension.

Although the Motorola use cases here are a bit ambitious, there are definitely more creative ideas to convert the phone to a bigger screen after trying a desktop computer.

Motorola's Ready For platform will be rolled out to Edge Plus users via the Verizon network starting today as part of the Android 11 update.

Motorola - the company owned by Lenovo - describes the platform as a versatile platform that amplifies the power of your smartphone beyond the limits of your device.
