Facebook is reducing expectations about its upcoming smart glasses

Facebook Chief Financial Officer (David Wehner)  provided an insight into the smart glasses that the company is building in collaboration with the Ray Ban brand, saying: The upcoming device will not be close to what the tech company hopes to achieve with augmented reality technology.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Communications conference, Weiner said:
The first product we will have later this year in that space won't be anywhere near where we want to finally get to, but smart glasses from Ray Ban in partnership with Luxottica.

Facebook announced the upcoming devices in September 2020, but it did not provide any details about the features or capabilities that are included in the upcoming product, as the only details revealed by the company are that the smart glasses will be released sometime in 2021.

“This is a huge milestone in starting to integrate basic technologies with regular eyeglasses and knowing how people use them,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in September while announcing the device.

Microsoft, Google, Apple and Amazon have joined Facebook among the companies racing to build and launch smart augmented reality glasses as a new generation of computing devices.

Weiner explained that augmented and virtual reality technologies remain major investment areas for Facebook, and said: We are investing heavily in augmented reality.

He added:
There are a lot of basic technologies that we need to build over a long period of time to get there, and augmented and virtual reality have the potential to be the next platform that we think represents the natural development of computing richness with the social aspect, and that is why we are investing heavily. Big in this area.

And Andrew Bosworth, head of devices at Facebook, confirmed last week that the company is considering integrating facial recognition technology with smart glasses if people want this feature.

Bosworth also reiterated that Facebook is on its way to launch Ray Ban smart glasses sometime in 2021.

“We are working hard with our partner Luxottica to make sure the shape fits, the functionality is good, and the integration is beneficial,” he said.
