Gerrard: I was surprised by the decision to exclude Arnold from the England national team ... and he is always ready to support him
Rangers coach Steven Gerrard said he was shocked that Trent Alexander Arnold had been disqualified from the England squad by coach Gareth Southgate.
Arnold was not part of the England national team to face San Marino, Albania, and Poland, in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Although Gareth Southgate has argued that the door has not closed on whether he will participate in Euro 2020, the 21-year-old was shocked at his being disqualified.
Gerrard, who has played 114 caps during England's 14-year career, worked with Alexander Arnold while coaching at Liverpool's academy and was a player with the potential to become a staple for his country.
And Gerrard said in statements published in the English newspaper "Daily Mail": "One thing is for sure, I will always be there for Arnold, and it goes without saying at any moment of the day, I will not take the first step, he knows where he is."
He added: "I do not necessarily agree with this decision, but I am not the England coach. I think Trent is the best English full-back, and one thing I have learned from being a player is that you cannot always be a 10 out of 10."
He continued: "When you are far from your level, you need this support, love, and attention from your coach more than anyone else, so I was surprised by the decision, but this is my opinion, and my opinion is not important in that."
He continued: "Arnold is a world-class right-back. He is the best player in his position in the country, by the way, we have other great players in the same position, but as far as this is concerned, I am there for Arnold, and any of the other Liverpool players at any moment of the day.".
