ID 5 .. a Volkswagen electric coupe coming this year

Volkswagen has confirmed that it will start production of its next electric vehicle, named ID 5, in Germany during the second half of 2021.

The first test series of ID 5 has begun production, as confirmed by the automaker in a recent tweet.

The ID 5 is a coupe version of the ID 4, which went on sale in Europe, China and North America in late 2020.

The ID 4 is the first vehicle based on the Volkswagen MEB's modular electric platform to arrive in North America, while its predecessor, the ID 3 hatchback, is only available in Europe.

The ID 5 may not arrive in North America, and a Volkswagen spokesperson said: There are currently no plans to bring the car to the United States.

The rough translation of that tweet reads: After the ID 3 and ID 4 comes the ID 5, as announced (Ralf Brandstätter), CEO of the Volkswagen brand, in a conversation with Wolfsburger Nachrichten magazine, and the coupe is being launched on the market during the second half of 2021.

Volkswagen's ID electric kit also includes concept versions of the large ID Roomzz SUV, the ID Buggy dune buggy, and a revamped version of the iconic ID Buzz microbus, for which Volkswagen has also promised a replacement, all built on the Volkswagen platform for electric vehicles Known as MEB.

The ID family will not be the first vehicles in Volkswagen to enter the battery-powered field.

E-Golf first launched in 2012, but was discontinued in 2020 as the automaker shifted its focus to its MEB-based vehicles.

Volkswagen's first fully electric sports car, the Taycan, went on sale in 2019.

The E-Tron, Audi's first battery-powered electric SUV that is owned by the Volkswagen Group, debuted in 2018.

Together, these vehicles represent the pinnacle of Volkswagen's effort to dominate the emerging electric vehicle market.

They are also important in helping Volkswagen turn the page on the now-six-year Dieselgate scandal, in which Volkswagen has been accused of installing illegal software in 11 million diesel cars in order to cheat emissions tests.
