Nvidia demands transparency on the RTX 30 series specifications
Nvidia is now asking companies selling laptops equipped with the new RTX 30-series graphics chips to be more transparent about the kind of power people can expect.
Nvidia states that these companies should reveal specific frequency and total graphics strength statistics across product pages across the Internet, while telling people everything they need to know about laptop graphics capabilities.
However, companies won't have to indicate that these chips are the Max-Q variants because, according to a NVIDIA spokesperson, the Max-Q mark is no longer part of the GPU name.
Instead, the Max-Q mark is now used to indicate that the laptop that includes an RTX 30-series graphics chip is equipped with efficiency features such as: Whisper Mode 2, Dynamic Boost 2 and Advanced Optimus.
Previously, the vision of the Max-Q brand made it easy to determine the overall performance of a laptop without the need to know the exact frequencies.
It is encouraging to see Nvidia no longer allow companies to hide this vital information from marketing materials.
The company wants to help buyers make an informed enough purchase without having to wait for reviewers and early adopters to report the specifications.
By sharing these specifications, companies can make it easier for consumers to understand how, in some cases, the RTX 3070 chip in the GP66 Leopard from MSI can outperform the RTX 3080 chip in the MSI GS66 Stealth computer.
Given that the Max-Q branding no longer refers to the power capabilities of the graphics chip, transparency about the frequency and the amount of power the chip can consume is more important than ever.
A spokesperson for Nvidia said: We are asking manufacturers to update product pages about the Max-Q technology features for each laptop, as well as frequency and power - which show the expected GPU performance in this system.
Nvidia says: Manufacturers have started sharing this information, including Asus, and here are some models that are due to be released soon (and the ones currently on the market):
